Gravedigger's Daughter is a dark fantasy mystery novelette, a character study of denied privilege and murder. Seren is an illicit undertaker in a society with rigid gender-roles, performing tasks normally forbidden to women, married to a man she does not love in order to continue her father's work.She honors the dead through her preparations, and the author gives us a brilliant character insight in the way that Seren instantly associates the people she knows with the flowers she'd plant on their graves.
It's little viewpoint touches that, along with the novelette's vivid descriptions, really bring us into the perceptual world of our protagonist. We're deep within Seren, looking out through her eyes, and Ms. Pill makes it easy to identify with her.
The author gives us just enough worldbuilding that we have a context to understand the stakes we're facing here, without falling into the all-too-frequent fantasy author pitfall of writing a travelogue. Her prose hints at a greater world beyond the viewing frame of the mystery we're presented with, and the details we are given serve to give us a concrete place to stand.
